Importance of a Language Translator

Globalization and Language Translation

Globalization has certainly affected our lives in more ways than one. With globalization, our lives have definitely been affected and changed in ways we sometimes do not even realize. A simple inventory of the things and appliances that you have in your very own home will reveal a very visible footprint of globalization. International brands for soap, toothpaste, clothes and electronic products that are imported from other countries fill up your home. The shows that you watch on the television are the same shows that people in other parts of the world are also watching – at the exact same time. And take note of the foreign subtitles that serve as a language translator that can be read at the bottom of the screen.

Similarly, businesses also have to adapt and be more responsive to the effects of globalization, especially if they hope to conquer the world market. And who would not want to conquer the world market when the barriers of trade are slowly being brought down by the effects of globalization? Companies now have different branches operating in different parts of the world. And they bring their products to other parts of the world where they sometimes have to make changes to adapt to the particular culture of that particular country. Sometimes, even using a language translator to provide for a more targeted and adaptive product name.

Internet and Language Translators

A very important product, or some may argue of it being an important catalyst, of globalization is the Internet. The Internet has truly made globalization and its effects more pronounced in our everyday lives. And ironically, these effects have made globalization so much a part of our everyday lives that we often fail to notice them, simply accepting them as natural parts of our normal lives.

Businesses leverage on the power of the Internet to get their messages across the whole world. Companies usually have websites that feature their products and services so that people from other parts of the world become aware of their company and products.

And it is not uncommon for a company to have various versions of their websites to cater to the different languages all around the world. They hire language translators to convert their website into different languages. Language translation becomes a vital necessity if one hopes to stay competitive in the modern way of doing business where your market is the entirety of the whole world.

Types of Language Translator

There are basically two types of language translators – the human language translator and the machine or language translator program. The two have their own advantages and disadvantages. But both of them can be equally important in their usage in bridging the gap in communication.

A human language translator is generally the more accurate when translating between languages. This can be more easily seen when translating ideas which are deeply rooted in the culture of the source language. Only a human translator can know the exact meaning of something that has cultural references. And he can readily translate it into another language, or interpreting its meaning to another language without losing its main essence.

And that is something that a machine language translator, or a software language translator simply cannot do. A software language translator is more mechanical in its approach at language translation. It translates words to its literal meaning on the target language. It translates words, phrases and sentences without much bearing to their cultural references.

But that is not to say that software language translators are without any important usage. Try asking a human language translator to translate a pile of paper documents in just a few hours because you need them immediately. Chances are that he or she would not be able to finish the job. It is simply because human language translator have their limitations when it comes to the amount of work that can be processed in a certain amount of time. It can certainly be more accurate than a machine language translator. But it certainly cannot be faster in translating documents word for word.

And this is where the application of software language translator become important. If one need to translate a pile of documents into another language, then the more practical thing to do is to use a software language translator instead of a human language translator who might take forever to finish the job.
